Media Ecology

Marshall McLuhan studied and asked questions about the relationship between media and culture. McLuhan saw the message and the medium as the same thing. Technology plays a huge role in our lives. We use technology everyday to help us communicate and function. McLuhan's said that, “it's not technological abnormality that demands our attention, since it's hard not to notice the new and different." (Griffin p. 313). We only notice technology when it's not working or available. We accept new technology so quickly that it usually blends seamlessly into our lives and becomes part of our lives. griffin says on page 314 that, "it's the ordinariness of media that makes them invisible. I tend to not notice how much media and technology are part of my life until the direct T.V. goes out.

I find the last line of your blog to be hilarious and absolutely true. The few times it has happened to me, i have been furious. I look back now and laugh. Its only a TV show. Yet I, and im sure most people, have built a relationship to the television shows they watch.

We rely so much on technology nowadays. Sometimes i think its amazing, other times is scares the daylights outta me. What would happen if all the technology we rely on suddenly stopped working?

McLuhan argued that communication technologies influences the way communicators think and interact with each other. So before the phonetic alphabet, those in the tribal age relied primarily on listening. Because of this, he posited that people had a more holistic view of their environment, a greater sense of community than we have now, and were more attentive to their current surroundings. So its the process of using the technology that greatly impacts thought and communication processes rather than the content of the message transmitted via that technology.

I dont think our society will realize how much we depend on technology until something crazy like the internet breaks. I always kid around with people about that, but I think it is actually a good thing to worry about.
We have so much dependance on technology that it worries me that companies and families are depending 100% on machines to store and create data and precious documents.
Hopefully, someone can comeout with a tangible product or service that will protect people and corporations from a falling out of major media and technological difficulties.
